What Is Tinnitus? Cayman Hearing Center’s Tips for Tinnitus Management

by | Dec 13, 2024 | Tinnitus

Have you been dealing with an irritating buzzing, whistling, whooshing, or fluttering in your ear? You might be dealing with tinnitus, which is the perception of a noise with no external source. Tinnitus affects millions of people worldwide, and it can lead to stress, lack of sleep, anxiety, and hearing loss challenges.

Tinnitus has many causes, but it isn’t a disease like many believe; rather, it’s a symptom of an underlying health condition, such as hearing loss challenges. Tinnitus has no cure—but it has many ways to be treated and alleviated.

If you’re dealing with tinnitus, please know that you’re not alone. There are multiple methods of treatment for tinnitus symptoms that will help you say goodbye to the troubling tone of tinnitus for good!

What Causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus can be caused by exposure to loud sounds, like concerts or live events; hearing loss challenges; stress; and medication side effects.

Earwax impaction can cause temporary tinnitus; for earwax removal and ear cleaning near you, please don’t hesitate to book with us for a thorough cleaning.

Stress can exacerbate tinnitus symptoms that were already present, so many forms of tinnitus treatment also include stress or anxiety management techniques.

How Do You Treat Tinnitus?

Treatments for tinnitus are varied, as no one treatment method will work the same for different people dealing with different symptoms. Tinnitus affects us in a variety of ways, and so our treatment options contain a few different ways to help alleviate your tinnitus, including:

  • Hearing aids, to correct hearing loss and provide sound therapy
  • Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), involving habituation therapy and counseling to retrain your brain and distract it from the sounds of tinnitus
  • Medication for more intense tinnitus symptoms, which can also help alleviate stress and anxiety associated with tinnitus
  • Relaxation and meditation therapy to alleviate stress and promote better sleep

What Should I Expect During a Tinnitus Screening?

During your tinnitus evaluation, your medical history, lifestyle choices, and family history will be reviewed so that we can get to know you as a patient and also help narrow down a possible cause for your tinnitus. We’ll also test your hearing to make sure that hearing loss isn’t one of those possible causes.

Your tinnitus screening will be quick and detailed, and it will help you understand the severity of any present tinnitus. We’ll go over potential treatment plans and the next steps with you after the test.
