If your hearing aids run off replaceable batteries, it can be puzzling to figure out where to store the excess batteries so they’re safe and ready for use when you need to replace them.
Hearing aid batteries are similar to regular batteries—they need to be stored in a cool, dry place, away from moisture or dirt. If you’re struggling to find the right spot for spare batteries that isn’t stuffed in a drawer in your kitchen, here’s some advice on the best ways to store hearing aid batteries.
Don’t Open the Packaging Until Ready for Use
Hearing aid batteries come in sealed packs with tabs on the back of each battery to be pulled off before use. Don’t remove your batteries from the pack or pull the tabs off until you’re ready to use them—as soon as the battery’s tab is removed, it begins using energy and will slowly drain away charge.
Store Away From Children and Babies
Coin batteries, like the ones most hearing aids use, often come in safer packaging that requires scissors to open. However, it’s essential to keep batteries stored in a secure place. Small hands, curious minds, or even a quick moment of distraction can lead to accidental access.
Even if your kids or grandkids don’t typically show interest in batteries, it’s best to store them somewhere completely out of reach. Batteries can last for a long time, but they’re not immortal. Make sure that your unopened batteries are kept safe and any open packs are used up before the sell-by date on the packaging. Even unopened batteries will eventually deteriorate!
