Hearing Protection

Cayman’s Most Trusted Hearing Protection Solutions

If you knew hearing loss was preventable, would you make some lifestyle changes? Most of us would. The good news is that hearing loss caused by noise exposure, known as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), can be avoided.

Most common causes of NIHL

The most common cause of NIHL is related to ongoing occupational noise, which tends to affect construction workers, factory workers, law enforcement, airport employees, and musicians, to name a few. However, noise damage to your ears can also come from recreational noise, like major sporting events, concerts, nightclubs, hunting and shooting sports, motocross, and others.

Over-the-counter earplugs might provide some protection against the damage caused by NIHL, but they don’t always provide enough protection or the right kind of protection, and they can be uncomfortable to wear.

After presbycusis (age-related hearing loss), noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) from a single extreme noise event or prolonged exposure to loud noise is the most common cause of acquired hearing loss and the number one cause for hearing loss in individuals from 17 to 65 years of age.

Custom hearing protection provides the best level of protection from noise damage and the most comfort to ensure that you continue to wear your hearing protection when you need it.

The Advantages of Custom Hearing
Protection Over OTC Options

One-size-fits-all, over-the-counter earplugs have several drawbacks, such as:

Poor wearing comfort.

Feeling like they are going to fall out

Inadequate acoustic seal

Muffling of all sounds, including ones you need to hear

Distortion of sound quality

May not provide adequate protection

Specialized hearing protection solutions are designed to provide the right protection during the specific activity you’re engaged in, thanks to features like:

Offering a full range of sounds at a reduced volume

Allowing sound to pass both ways, so your voice isn’t distorted.

Providing systematic sound reduction using precision-engineered filters

Feeling less irritation and discomfort from medical-grade silicon construction.

Using interchangeable sound filters, so one sound protection device works for all of the activities where you need them.

In contrast, a personalized noise protection device that is custom-formed to the unique contours of your ear is more comfortable and provides a more secure fit, even during aggressive activities.

FAQs

About Hearing Protection

Can’t find what you’re looking for?

Why should I wear hearing protection?

Loud noise destroys the very sensitive and irreplaceable hair-like cells in the inner ear. Without them, your ears become less efficient at receiving and transmitting sound signals to your brain.

Ongoing exposure to noise levels above 85 dB (decibels) for up to 8 hours without hearing protection will damage your hearing, and for each 3 dB increase in volume, the time of exposure without damage is cut in half.

How much time can you be exposed to various noise intensities before damage occurs? Follow this link to find out.

Where and when should I use hearing protection?

High-noise environment occupations typically include pilots, musicians, construction workers, and factory workers. In most of these occupations, specialized hearing protection is a part of your mandatory safety equipment. However, you could be doing damage to your hearing from noise related to your regular activities and lifestyle, such as:

  • Mowing the lawn
  • Riding your motorcycle
  • Using a chainsaw or power tools around the house
  • Pneumatic tools (drills, nail guns, power wrenches)
  • Concerts
  • Major sporting events
  • Bars and nightclubs
  • Gunshots
  • Fireworks and firecrackers
Do you offer custom-fit earplugs for different purposes?
Yes. We offer customized ear protection for various environments, like swimming and surfing. Although not damaged by noise, hearing protection for water sports can help protect you against “surfer’s ear” (bone growth that occurs in the ear canal in response to cold water) and “swimmer’s ear” (caused from water being stuck in the ear canal causing a bacterial infection).
Can I use one set of earplugs for different situations?
Yes. Some of the custom earplugs we provide have interchangeable filters so you can use them in different environments and for different activities.
Are there earplugs for musicians and concertgoers?
Yes. We also provide earplugs for musicians and concertgoers.
Can you help me choose the best hearing protection to fit my needs?
Yes. Our consultations for hearing protection typically include a hearing test in order to establish a baseline hearing threshold against which we can monitor changes to your hearing and determine if your hearing protection is effective.
What does NRR mean for hearing protection?
A noise reduction rating (NRR) provides a standard guideline as to the potential of a device to reduce noise in decibels (dB). Higher NRR numbers mean you’re getting a higher level of hearing protection than lower numbers.
